My Very Own Room

I am redecorating one of our spare bedrooms in order to claim it as my very own room! This will be a room in which I can keep my magickal books, my delicate dolphin and fairy figurines (away from the kitties), a plant or two, and several other of my favorite things. This idea was recently suggested to me by my therapist. Mostly because I am an only child and I naturally require my own private space.

So we've got three bedrooms and a loft. One of our two spare rooms is set up with a futon, treadmill, Honey's guitars and amp, and TV (and other movie-viewing equiptment) on a stand. The other room, the one I am planning to transform, is currently acting as our guest room. But we never have guests. I'm not planning on trying to get preggers for another year or two and we can't seem to talk our drunk friends to stay over when we have parties. Therefore, I'm claiming that room as MINE! Any potential guests we may have can crash on the futon in the "workout" room.

Here are pictures of the room as it is now:

The ceiling light really sucks in there so I had to lighten the picture to make the top half of the walls appear white instead of golden! (The ceiling light is one of the first things I am going to change).

Not surprisingly, we refer to this room as the 'ABC Room.' It's such a cute room, I hate to destroy it. But I've always wanted to start decorating my own home and this just seems like the perfect opportunity. Plus, that's just way too much light blue for me! I'm thinking of painting the walls a pale purple (lavender) or sage green. And then stenciling or sponging images of leaves, fairies, etc in the corners or just below the ceiling on the walls. Then I'll need to repaint some (or all) of that hand-me-down furniture to give it all new life. And of course, there will need to be new linens, more pillows, etc.

Since I've never decorated on my own before, I can really use some help from you all! I know it's probably a good idea to start with a piece (picture, fabric, etc) for inspiration but I have nothing in particular. I know for a fact that I want to frame and hang this in the room:

(When I was small, my bedroom was painted bright orange, yellow and white. My parents found this Sweet Dreams Doll by Romper Room named Abigail, and she just happened to be yellow and white! I still have the doll and the above was cut out from the box she came in...my dad used to have it framed for me.)

So....any ideas? Suggestions? Places to start? At this point, I'm planning on just going to Home Depot and bringing home a zillion paint swatches, taping them to the walls in there and just staring at them for a few hours until I decide! What do you think?
